Learn how to do it, or have it done for you.

Both are on the table and plenty of people use both. Pick whichever fits the track in front of you.

Played out

The records in other artists' sets.

A track can sound finished in the studio and still come apart on a large system. These clips are the point at which you find out whether it did.

Getting a record to that stage is most of what the sessions are about, and it is the part that is hardest to learn without regular access to a club rig.

Footage is either sent through by the artist or filmed at the show. Around 150 clips like these have come in across the releases to date.

Who this is for

Techno and hard techno producers, at any level.

Beginners and people with releases out both book in. The only thing that changes is where we start.

Starting out

New to production

The first session covers a kick, a bass and a working groove, with the reasoning behind each decision explained so the process can be repeated independently.

Getting there

Loops working, tracks unfinished

This is usually a question of arrangement, energy management, and a mixdown that falls apart once every element is layered. Sessions work directly in your project file.

Releasing

Releasing and refining

Sub frequency behaviour, translation on large systems, loudness without loss of impact, and direct feedback on how a track compares to current releases in the genre.

Call and response, sixteen steps

How it works

How a session is booked and run.

  1. 01

    Book and pay

Select a time and pay in the same step. There is no enquiry form and no waiting for a reply before a slot can be confirmed.

  2. 02

    Complete the booking questions

Three short questions are included in the booking form. Your answers determine what the session covers.

  3. 03

    The session, and the recording

Sixty minutes over Zoom with screen sharing, working in your project. The full session is recorded and sent to you afterwards, so there is no need to take notes during it.

The three questions

  1. What are you working on at the moment? Include a link if you have one. An unfinished loop is more useful than a completed track.
  2. What is not sounding right? Specific answers are more useful than general ones. "The kicks feel weak" gives more to work with than "I want to improve".
  3. What have you already tried? This avoids covering ground you have been over already.

Who you would be working with

Eight years producing techno and hard techno.

Most of what I know came from releasing records, playing them on club systems, and finding out where they fell short in front of an audience. Touring interstate most weekends meant hearing my own mixdowns on a different rig each week, which makes it clear very quickly which decisions hold up outside headphones.

Common questions

I am a complete beginner. Is this too early?

No. Beginners often progress quickly because there are no established habits to correct. Note your level in the booking form and the session will start at the right point.

Do I have to use Ableton?

Ableton is what I work in, so that is what appears on screen. The concepts transfer to FL Studio and Logic, and a number of students work in those.

What time zone are you in?

Australia. Availability is set to suit European hours, and the booking calendar displays times in your own time zone.

What if it is not for me?

The trial session exists for that reason. Take one session, assess whether it was useful, and book again only if it was.
